With the launch of our 2024 Annual Report, GSF reflects on a year of growth and accomplishments, from advancing pioneering legislation for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence in Ukraine to the end of our first three interim reparative measurements projects.
The success of our pilot in Ukraine – delivering urgent financial compensation to survivors across the country – helped inform the ‘Bardina Law’ ratified by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in December last year.
For the first time ever in an ongoing conflict, survivors of sexual violence were officially recognised and will receive urgent interim reparation. GSF continues to work closely with survivors and the Ukrainian government to ensure the law is carried out and delivered in a survivor-centred manner.
Lives changed in Guinea, the DRC, and Iraq
2024 marked the end of our first three interim reparative measures pilots, launched in 2019 and 2020 in Guinea, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Iraq.
Our continuous evaluations showed the projects changed the lives of survivors and their families, and community wellbeing across the board, from a trebling in quality of life scores in the DRC to improved social acceptance for Yazidi women in northern Iraq. Full Impact Reports will be released throughout the course of 2025.
Survivor-led advocacy at the highest levels
Survivor networks have continued to advocate for their right to reparation. In 2024, we saw this across in the DRC, Kenya, Uganda, the Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan, we saw the continued impact of the Kinshasa Declaration, signed in 2021.
In August, 12 survivors from the DRC presented recommendations to the national fund for reparations in Kinshasa, while survivor networks in CAR launched an advocacy initiative, targeting local and national authorities, focused on the positive impact of co-creation and its influence on national dialogue and peace.
Survivors also played a key role in the passing of the Bardina Law in Ukraine, actively participating in discussions with lawmakers on the content and delivery of reparative measures provided under the law.
